چکیده

tions (,10-3 M) of pyruvate will induce prompt and sustained stimulation of sodium transport. Only pyruvate and, to a lesser extent, those substrates known to yield pyruvate during the course of their metabolism, i.e., glucose, lactate, and oxalacetate, have been found to possess this stimulatory effect in the aldosteronetreated bladder. Possibile mechanisms for this effect of pyruvate are considered.

Regulation of Tyrosine &ietoglutarate Transaminase in Rat Liver

The role of the pancreatic hormones, insulin and glucagon, in the regulation of hepatic tyrosine transaminase (L-tyrosine : Z-oxoglutarate aminotransferase, EC 2.6.1.5) was studied in adrenalectomized rats. Each of these hormones initiated a rapid but limited increase in the enzyme level, which reached a maximum after 2.5 to 3 hours. The optimal doses of insulin and glucagon per 100 g of body w...

Regulation of hepatic glycogen synthesis during fetal development: roles of hydrocortisone, insulin, and insulin receptors.

In fetal rat liver in utero, an increase in glycogen and the glycogen synthetic enzyme glycogen synthetase (EC 2.4.1.11) occurs between gestational days 17 and 19. We used an organ culture system for finding the stimulus for increased enzyme activity and defining the relationship of this increase to glycogen synthesis. In fetal-liver explants from an earlier period (gestational day 16), hydroco...

Studies on the Mechanism of Hormonal Induction of Alkaline Phosphatase in Human Cell Cultures

Increased alkaline phosphatase activity is induced in certain epithelial cell cultures by hormones with adrenal glucocorticoid activity or their analogues such as prednisolone (Delta(I)-hydrocortisone). Enzyme induction occurs in two distinct phases. During the first 12 hr after the addition of prednisolone, there is a small increase in alkaline phosphatase levels. After 15 to 24 hr, the enzyme...

Control of glutamine synthetase synthesis in the embryonic chick neural retina. A caution in the use of actinomycin D.

The cortisol induction of the enzyme glutamine synthetase (EC 6.4.1.2) in the embryonic chick neural retina is controlled initially at the transcriptional level, as previously demonstrated by the unique appearance of a 15 S RNA species which codes for a single and identical polypeptide chain of glutamine synthetase. This is found only on polyribosomes of cortisol-treated retinas. Recent experim...
